Mr. Schmidt has regularly represented clients in many types of business and real estate transactions, such as leases of commercial and industrial space, purchases, and construction projects. These transactions include medical facilities, college facilities, various businesses and general offices.
He has represented individuals and businesses in business litigation in state and federal courts.
He regularly works with land owners to negotiate mineral leases and represents individuals and companies involved in oil and gas exploration.
He has represented both employers and employees in employment disputes and litigation and in EEOC investigations. He has assisted in the development of employee policies for employers in a variety of businesses and has advised many employers on methods to resolve issues so as to avoid employee claims.
He has served as president of home owners associations and has represented home owners associations and others in zoning matters and deed restriction disputes.
Mr. Schmidt has served as counsel for medical facilities, physicians, and affiliated entities and professionals in business matters, administrative proceedings and litigation. These include hospital and professional contracting, regulatory issues, employee matters, staff and credentialing issues, medical liability questions and other business and governance issues. He has also served as counsel to a number of psychiatric facilities and nursing homes in Texas. He previously represented the Texas Independent Nursing Home Association in regulatory matters before the Texas Department of Health.
He has represented medical professionals and facilities before the Texas Department of Health, the Texas Department of Health and Human Services and before various licensing and regulatory agencies. He has served on committees of the Texas Department of Human Services (developing Medicaid sanctions), the Texas Department of Health (working on both Minimum Licensing Standards for Nursing Homes and Administrative Penalties for Nursing Homes), and the Texas Health and Human Services Advisory Council.
Mr. Schmidt was appointed by Governor White to and chaired the Texas Task Force on Alcohol and Drug Abuse in 1986. He received the Heatly Award for leadership in alcohol and drug issues from the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (TCADA) in 1987. He was appointed to that Commission by Governor Clements in 1988 and served as Vice Chairman of that Commission.
