Admiralty/Maritime
Cotten Schmidt & Abbott has a long history in the admiralty/maritime legal arena. With our offices’ close proximity to the Mississippi River, Gulf of Mexico, and international waters, we have had the access and opportunity to handle just about every blue and brown water type admiralty/maritime issue.
Whether it has been a blue or brown water incident, the Firm has handled all forms of personal injuries occurring onboard vessels, rigs and platforms, ranging from minor injuries like slip and falls to multiple, simultaneous fatalities from blowouts and explosions.
Some of the other specific areas handled involved pollution incidents, charter party disputes, preparation of charter parties, cargo claims, maritime attachments, vessel arrests and attachments, maritime liens, allisions, collisions, vessel agent issues, stevedore issues, shipbroker issues, terminal issues, the purchase and sale of vessels, and maritime product liability.
Although the majority of our admiralty/maritime trials have involved the defense of corporations, we have represented individual plaintiffs as well. In one case in particular, attorneys with our firm tried a jury trial involving the claims of Captain Wayne Gough, master of the ill-fated F/V NORTHUMBERLAND. We were successful after a five (5) day trial in having the jury return for Captain Gough the highest reported general damage award for post traumatic stress disorder at that time in Texas, namely, $1,444,599.00
